Prabha Atre



Born in 1932 in Pune, Maha- rashtra, Kumari Prabha Atre received her training in vocal music from Shri Sureshbabu Mane and Shrimati Hirabai Barodekar of the Kirana gharana.
Both as a performer and teacher, Kumari Prabha Atre has pursued a serious career in music. She has served with All India Radio as an Assistant Producer of Music and is now Professor and Head of the Department of Music at S.N.D.T. Women’s University, Bombay. She has also been a visiting professor in several universities in the West. Kumari Prabha Atre is a regular broadcaster and has a large number of gramophone records and cassettes to her credit. Among other honours, Kumari Prabha Atre received a Maharashtra Government award for her book Swara- mayee in 1989 and the Padma Shri in 1990.
Kumari Prabha Atre receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
