Born in 1919 in Bombay, Shri Firoz Dastur learnt Hindustani vocal music initially from Shri K.D. Jaoker, later from Sawai Gandharva — both of the Kirana Gharana. At fourteen he made his debut as a singer-actor in the film Lal-e-Yaman and for some years played lead roles in a number of productions. A distinguished teacher of music, Shri Firoz Dastur has trained many students over the years. He has been closely associated with the Music Department of Bombay Univer- sity since its inception in 1969. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Firoz Bejanji Dastur receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1986.
