Born in 1929 in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, Shri Vellore Gopala Ramabhadran receiyed his training in Mridangam from his father Shri Vellore T.P. Gopalachari. He was also trained in vocal music, Kanjira, Ghatam, and Konakkol.
Shri Vellore G. Ramabhadran made his first public appearance in 1942 as a Mridangam accom- panist for Shri Madurai Mani Iyer and has been a professional artiste from his 20s. He has performed extensively, accom- panying leading Carnatic vocalists and instrumentalists at home and abroad. Among other notable appearances, he was featured in the Festivals of India in U.K., U.S.A., and U.S.S.R. He received the title of Kalaimamani from the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1976.
