Ulhas Kashalkar



Shri Ulhas N. Kashalkar was born in 1955 in Pandharkawada village in Maharashtra. He belongs to a family of musicians and was initially groomed by his father Nagesh Dattatray Kashalkar, a well-known vocalist of the Gwalior gharana. He also trained under Pandit Ram Marathe and later honed his skills as a student of Gajananrao Joshi. A top-grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, Shri Ulhas Kashalkar worked as a Programme Executive at AIR from 1983 to 1990. For over a decade now, he has taught music at ITC’s Sangeet Research Academy in Kolkata, where he has trained many students of high calibre. He is a performer of exceptional brilliance himself, blessed with a supple voice and the ability to blend the gayakis of Gwalior, Agra and Jaipur gharanas in a manner that is aesthetically appropriate. He has participated in many major festivals of music in India and has represented the country at the Multicultural Festival in Australia in 2006 and the Amsterdam India festival in 2008. He has also organized and participated in several workshops and seminars in India and abroad. The number of recording companies that have issued cassettes and CDs of his music testifies to his popularity with listeners. Shri Kashalkar has received awards from several institutions for his work in the field. Shri Ulhas Kashalkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani vocal music.
