Ustad Sharafat Husain Khan was born in 1930 in Jaipur in an eminent family of musicians. He received his early training in music from his father Ustad Liaquat Husain Khan and thereafter from illustrious musicians like Ustad Faiyaz Husain Khan, Ustad Ata Husain Khan and Ustad Vilayat Husain Khan. He was groomed in the Agra, Atrauli and Rangila Gharanas and thus his Gayaki represents the fusion of these three gharanas and is recog- nised today as one of the foremost exponents of these Gharanas. Ustad Sharafat Husain Khan has evolved his own distinct style of Khyal singing. Besides the Khyal he has also acquired proficiency over the Dhrupad, Tappa and Thumri. He has over two hundred compositions to his credit under the pen-name ‘Prem Rang’. He has been on the concert platform from a very young age and has performed extensively throughout the country. He has been honoured by the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi and was awarded the Padma Shri in 1982. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Ustad Sharafat Husain Khan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1984.
