Born on 7 June 1975, Shrimati Shaili Satyu belongs to a family of theatre-makers. Her
mother Shama Zaidi was a famous writer, designer, and director and her father M.S.
Sathyu is still active in theatre as a designer, director and activist. Shrimati Shaili
Satyu has been working in the field of theatre as an actor, set designer, and lighting
designer since her childhood. Inspired by her grandmother Begum Qudsia Zaidi, who
established the first theatre company of Independent India – Hindustani Theatre –
and wrote extensively for children, Shrimati Shaili Satyu has focused her creative
energies on theatre for the young.
Shrimati Shaili Satyu has written and directed a number of plays for children including Suar Chala Space Ko, Kyoon-Kyoon Lakdee, Mr Jijibhoy and the Birds, She/He/ Shey, Catch that Crocodile, Gulabo and Parizad. Five years ago she established Gillo – a professional repertory in Mumbai performing only for young audiences. This theatre company with 16 full-time theatre-makers has done 14 plays in five years, all specially created for Gillo with original Indian content. These include Hanuman ki Ramayan and Taoos Chamanki Myna.
Shrimati Shaili Satyu has worked with eminent directors such as Satyadev Dube, Prasanna, Nadira Zaheer Babbar, and Ramesh Talwar, among many others. She regularly conducts workshops for school teachers and students. Her previous work in theatre includes set costume and light design for over 15 plays for groups like IPTA, Ekjute, Theatre Unit, Bangalore Little Theatre and Sanket.
Shrimati Shaili Satyu is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for 2013-2014 for her notable talent as a lighting designer.
