Born in 1932 in Bangalore, Shri Rajeev Taranath received his training in Sarod from the renowned maestro Ali Akbar Khan of the Maihar Senia gharana. Over the years he has developed a distinctive style, and performs widely within the country and abroad. He holds a Ph.D. in English literature. A professor of Indian music at the California Institute of the Arts, U.S.A., Rajeev Taranath has been associated with a number of universities in the U.S.A., and has undertaken research in the teaching methodology of his gharana. The Government of Karnataka has honoured him for his outstanding musician- ship with the Chowdiah Award in 1997. He has also received the Karnataka Sangeet Nritya Academy Award. Shri Rajeev Taranath receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
