Sangeet Natak Akademi Award 1991 Music - Hindustani - Surbahar Born in 1929 in Maihar, Madhya Pradesh, Shrimati Annapurna Devi received her training in music from her father Ustad Allauddin Khan, the illustrious representative of the Senia gharana. She learnt both vocal music and the Sitar and Surbahar. It is as a player of Surbahar that Shrimati Annapurna Devi is best known. After a successful career on the concert platform in the '50s, Shrimati Annapurna Devi dedicated herself to the teaching of music. She has been guru to some outstanding instrumentalists including Shri Nikhil Banerjee and Ustad Bahadur Khan. Among her students practising today are Shri Hariprasad Chaurasia, Shri Ashish Khan, and Shri Shubho Shankar. Shrimati Annapurna Devi was also a visiting teacher for several years at the National Centre for the Performing Arts, Bombay. For her outstanding contribution to music she received the Padma Bhushan in 1977. Shrimati Annapurna Devi receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
