Pakija Begum

Born on 30 January 1972 in Katani Gaon, Nagaon, Assam, Shrimati Pakija Begum has been associated with theatre since 1988. She started her career in acting by taking part in plays presented by amateur theatre groups, and later went on to join the Seagull theatre group as a founder member. In 1995 she established BA, a cultural organization, in Guwahati with Anup Hazarika. She has worked with several mobile theatre groups of Assam, such as the Anirban theatre, Mukunda theatre, Hengul theatre, and the Shrimanta Shankaradeva theatre. Pakija has worked with many directors and has acted in many plays such as Yayati, Antigone, Chinaki Pakhir Gan, Agnigarh, Maramanuhar Hanhi, and Mrityur Dath Chhan. Apart from Assam, these plays have been staged in different parts of the country.
A trained Bihu dancer, Pakija has authored a book of children’s plays titled Xarudhemali Bardhemali. She has received awards such as Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Award for Best Supporting Actor (Female) in 2008, Aideo Handique Award by the Government of Assam, and Asom Natya Samitee Award.
Shrimati Pakija Begum is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2010 for her talent in the field of theatre as an Actor.
