Born on 1 February 1974 at Imphal, Manipur, Shrimati
Sanabam Thaninleima Chanu received her initial training in
theatre from Shri Loitongbam Dorendra with whom she
worked for eight years till 1997. She trained at the National
School of Drama between 1998 and 2001. She is also an
M.A. in Linguistics, and has obtained a Ph.D. in
Contemporary Manipuri Theatre with special emphasis on
the theatre of Ratan Thiyam from Manipur University. She
has also studied theatre at the National Theatre of Korea.
Thaninleima has also earned a Diploma in Manipuri
Classical Dance. She is associated with a theatre group
Khenjonglang engaged in theatre research and production in
Imphal. The group has participated in a number of theatre
festivals such as the Bharat Rang Mahotsav, and Octave.
Well known for her plays such as Ashang Eina Aton,
Macbeth, Mrichhakatikam, and Kankal, she has also written
plays such as Kodomdano Chatlisibu, Rickshaw Amasung
Nongmei and Ei Ngaoba Natte which have also been
directed by her. In addition, she has been working with the
people of the hill areas of Manipur imparting training in
theatre to the young and upcoming artists of the tribal
S. Thaninleima is a recipient of a Junior Fellowship of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India.
Shrimati S. Thaninleima Chanu is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2010 for her talent in the field of theatre as a Director.
