Born 1914 in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, in a family of traditional musicians, Shri Hanuman Prasad Mishra learnt sarangi from his father Pandit Sutsahai Mishra and Pandit Bade Ram- dasji of the Banaras gharana; the gharana specializes in tappa. Besides Sarangi, he trained in vocal music. Over a long career Shri Hanuman Mishra has accom- panied on Sarangi some of the leading Hindustani vocalists of our time: Ustads Faiyyaz Khan and Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Pandits Omkarnath Thakur and D.V. Paluskar, Shrimati Kesarbai Kerkar and Shrimati Gangubai Hangal, to name only a few. A dedicated teacher, Shri Hanuman Mishra has taught Sarangi and vocal music to a number of students, Indian and foreign, some well known today. He has played for Akashvani for a number of years. Among other honours, Shri Hanuman Mishra received an award from Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1986. Shri Hanuman Prasad Mishra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu- tion to Hindustani instrumental music.
