Shri Gopal Misra has been a very distinguished Sarangi player of our time. Shri Gopal Misra was trained by his father the late Sursahai Misra and by his elder brother Hanuman Misra and also by the late Bade Ramdassji. Shri Gopal Misra pursued the Varanasi Gharana of Sarangi, also known as the Tappa Gharana. He demonstrated exceptional mastery over intonation, control of laya and the delineation of the intricacies and subtleties of a raga. Shri Gopal Misra accompani- ed practically all the stalwarts of Hindustani music in his time. His work as a soloist was equally well acclaimed. The titles and recognitions he received include one from the Nepal Darbar. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Gopal Misra is honoured, posthumously, with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Instru- mental Music.
