Born in 1926 in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, Shri Sakharam Prabhakar Jalgaonkar received his training in music from Balkrishnabuva Chikhalikar and Shabbu Khan of the Tanras gharana. Popularly known as Appa Jalgaonkar, he has established himself as one of the foremost exponents of the harmonium. He has accompanied most of the leading musicians and dancers of the country, and has made a contribution in the art of accompaniment with vocal music. He has also been acclaimed as a soloist, and has produced a number of cassettes and records of his solo performances. His per- formances in major festivals have added a new dimension to Indian instrumental music. Shri Sakharam Prabhakar Jalgaonkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindu- stani instrumental music.
