Born on 6 August 1980 at Nagpur in Maharashtra, Shrimati Uma
Sathyanarayanan received her initial training in Bharatanatyam under
Shrimati Srimathy Madkholkar. Later, she received her advanced training
under Shrimati Chitra Visweswaran. She has also trained in Kuchipudi
dance under the guidance of Shri Jayarama Rao and Shrimati Vanashree
Rao. Shrimati Uma is also a trained Carnatic vocalist who received
training in Carnatic music under Shrimati Rajeswari Neelanthan, Shri R.
Visweswaran and Shri A. S. Murali. She is a recipient of a scholarship
from the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training (C.C.R.T.) for her
training in Carnatic vocal music, and the National Scholarship from the
Ministry of Culture for her training in Bharatanatyam.
She has performed extensively in various festivals such as Swarn Nritya Pratibha of Sangeet Natak Akademi, Khajuraho Festival, Melattur Bhagavatha Mela Festival, Soorya Festival, Anushruti Festival, Pragjyoti Festival, and at the various Sabhas of Chennai. She has also travelled to Sri Lanka, U.K., U.S.A, France, and U.A.E. for performances.
Shrimati Uma Sathyanarayanan has been honoured with various awards including Yuva Kala Bharati, Nrithya Sundaram, Vedantam Sathyanarayana Sarma Award and Nadanamamani.
Shrimati Uma Sathyanarayanan is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2012 for her notable talent in the field of Bharatanatyam.
