Shrimati Gayathri Girish was born on 9 October 1973 in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.
She received her training in Carnatic vocal music from S. Gnanaskandan and T.N.
Seshagopalan. She also learnt violin from Lalgudi G. Jayaraman and T. Rukmini.
She has obtained a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, Masters in Computer
Applications, and is currently pursuing her PhD in music.
An 'A' grade artist of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and an empanelled artist of ICCR, Gayathri has performed widely in many prestigious music festivals in the country and abroad, besides giving lecture-demonstrations on music at various institutions, and appearing in many television shows. She has successfully completed a thematic multimedia production “Myriad Forms of Lord Shiva” under the “Production Grant Scheme” of the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The entire project was covered in 12 episodes at Ragasudha Hall, Chennai and Tattvaloka, Chennai and covered 75 compositions of Muthuswamy Dikshitar. She has a large number of recordings to her credit.
She has received numerous titles and awards including the Sangeet Bhaskara given by Gnanaskandan Trust, Madras (1995); the Gana Rathna conferred by the Government of Sri Lanka; the Isai Peroli given by Karthik Fine Arts, Chennai (2003); the title of Kalaimamani conferred by the Eyal Isai Nataka Manram, Government of Tamil Nadu (2011); and the Sangeetha Sarathy by Sri Matha Samarpanam Trust, Chennai (2013).
Shrimati Gayathri Girish is awarded the Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar of Sangeet Natak Akademi for the year 2012 for her notable talent in the field of Carnatic vocal music.
