Born in 1919 in Lucknow, Shri Naushad Ali was groomed in music by Sarvashri Babban Saheb, Laddan Saheb and Yusuf Ali. Shri Naushad Ali has composed music for more than 60 films in Bombay, the success of many of which can be attributed entirely to his haunting compositions. By his innovative use of Indian instruments, he has made a unique contribution to the development of orchestration of Indian music. He is acknowledged as one of the chief architects of the period now accepted as the golden age of Indian film music. Among the innumerable awards and honours bestowed upon him are the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1982, the Lata Mangeshkar Award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh in 1985, the Gaurav Puraskar from the Government of Maharashtra in 1990, and the Padma Bhushan in 1992. Shri Naushad Ali receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to music in the media.
