Born on 1 April 1955 in Wangkhem village of Thoubal district of Manipur, Shri Kakchingtabam Shanathoiba Sharma learnt Thang-ta under several masters including Shri G. Gourakishor Sharma, Shri G. Sana Sharma, Shri M. Ibetombi Singh, Shri S. Devabrata Singh, Shri H. Ibotombi Singh, Shri P. Manichand Singh and Shri K. Biren Singh. He has completed three years’ Certificate course and two years’ Diploma course in Thang-ta from Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-ta Cultural Association, Irilbung, Manipur. He has also learnt acting from Shri H. Dhaka Singh, Shri Naba Wareppa and Shri K. Birahari Sharma.
Over the last three decades, Shri K. Shanathoiba Sharma has dedicated himself entirely for popularizing the art of Thang-ta. Shri Sharma established the Association for Paona Memorial Arts and Rural Development Services, Thoubal Wangkhem in 1981. He has represented Thang-ta in many prestigious festivals in the country and abroad including Guinea, Sierra Leona, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. He has also acted in several plays directed by Shri K.B. Sharma such as Likshangnu Shaphabi, Meirilakta Nongsha Ama, and Wayel.
Shri K. Shanathoiba Sharma has received several honours in recognition of his work in the field. These include the Manipur State Kala Akademi Award (1993-94); the Fellowship of Manipur State Kala Akademi (1987-88); the Kala Bhusan conferred by Manipur Sahitya Parishad, Imphal (2010); and the title “Safa Lanfaba” (Brave Warrior) conferred by Shri Shri Govindaji Temple Board, Imphal (1997).
Shri Kakchingtabam Shanathoiba Sharma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2014 for his contribution to Thang-ta of Manipur.
