Khadim Hussain Khan

I present to you, Sir, Shri Khadim Hussein Khan.
Born in 1904, Shri Khadim Hussein Khan is one of our best known vocalists of the older generation. Trained mainly under Kallan Khan, he studied also with Vilayat Hussain Khan, Faiyaz Hussain Khan and Mehboob Khan ‘Daras’.
Shri Kallan Khan was the younger son of Ghagge Khudabaksh, the founder of Agra gharana. Mehboob Khan ‘Daras’ was one of the most distinguished exponents of Atrauli gharana. Khadim Hussein Khan, thus, inherits the art and technique of the Agra and the Atrauli gharanas of HIndustanI vocal music. His style is known for its dignity and clarity of presentation of ragas and for its command over tala. He has been variously honoured and the Government of Maharashtra bestowed upon him, in 1978, its first Award for Meritorious Services to the cause of Music.
For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Khadim Hussein Khan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Vocal Music for 1978.
