Born in 1941 in Pune, Maha- rashtra, into a family of traditional Gondhal-singers, Shri Keshav Laxman Badge began to perform with his father while still in his childhood. He is today a renowned master of Gondhal, the ritual performance art of Maharash- tra. Over a long career, he has performed widely in the state and in other parts of the country. He has also participated in important festivals of arts in Germany and Morocco. In addition to having a large repertoire of Gondhal folk songs, Shri Badge is an accomplished percussionist, equally adept at playing the Sambal Dhol Nal Duff and other folk instruments He has been trained in Tabla under Ustad Alia Rakha and has accompanied eminent musicians including Bhimsen Joshi. Shri Keshav Badge has a number of cassettes and other recordings to his credit and has rendered Gondhal in several Marathi films. He has received awards from various institu- tions. Shri Keshav Laxman Badge receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contri- bution to Gondhal of Maha- rashtra.
