Born in 1931 in Madhubani, Bihar, Shri Uma Shankar Mishra was initiated into instrumental music by his father, Shri Hariprasad Mishra and later studied with Shri Ravi Shankar in the Senia gharana. Shri Mishra has evolved a personal style of playing the Sitar that is distinguished for its quiet elegance and imagination. Also a teacher, he has trained a number of students over the post three aecodes, including his son Modon Shonkor Mishra. He has performed widely in India as well as in the United States, Europe, and many Asian countries. The Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi, honoured him with the Parishad Samman in 1991. Shri Uma Shankar Mishra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
