Lalgudi M. Swaminathan



Born in 1928 in Lalgudi, Tamil Nadu, Shri Lalgudi M. Swaminathan learnt the art of singing Tevaram at the Arulmigu Palani Andanar Devasthanam, and also from Shri M.M. Dandapani Desigar and Shri D. Sambandam Pillai at Annamalai University. Since 1963 Shri Swaminathan has served as chief Oduvar at the Kapaleeshwarar temple in Madras, and regularly sings Tevaram at various other temples. Being trained in Carnatic classical music, he has also sung in concerts in Singapore, Mauritius and South Africa. He received the title Kalaimamani from the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Nataka Manram in 1981. Shri Lalgudi M. Swami-nathan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Tevaram. He is the first Tevaram performer to be thus honoured.
