S.S.S. Thakur

Born 1915 in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, Shri Shiv Saran Singh Thakur has been involved with the folk theatre and music of the region for several decades. A participant in amateur theatricals at Shimla and Delhi, Shri S.S.S. Thakur joined All India Radio in 1935 as a staff artist and producer. In this capa- city he conducted a number of programmes disseminating the folk culture of Himachal Pradesh. Subsequently, he served All India Radio and Doordarshan in various capacities till 1975, and was Emeritus Producer from 1982 to 1985. Shri S. S. S. Thakur is best known for his services to Karyala — the folk theatre of Himachal Pradesh — both as a broadcaster and author. His monograph Karyala, published by Sangeet Natak Akademi, is among the few publications on the subject. He is also the author of Himachal Lok Lahari,a notated compilation of folk songs from all districts of Himachal Pradesh, which received the Pandit Bal Krishna Sharma ‘Naveen’ Award from the Government of Uttar Pradesh. For his contribution to the performing arts of the region, Shri S.S.S. Thakur was honoured by the Government of Himachal Pradesh in 1986. Shri S. S. S. Thakur receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Karyala.
