Simanchal Patro

Born in 1927 in the village of Bamakei in Ganjam district of Orissa, Shri Simanchal Patro began his career in Prahlad Natak — a traditional theatre from the southern districts of Orissa enacting the myth of Nrisimha avatara — as a child actor in the role of Prahlad. He received his training in Prahlad Natak from Shri Kora Patra, Shri Laxman Satpathy and Shri Trinath Pradhan. Graduating to other roles in this one-play theatre, Shri Simanchal Patro eventually settled in the role of Hiranyakashipu in the Prahlad Natak company of Lakshmi Nrusimha Natya Kala Sansad, Ganjam. He has been acting this role-which demands consider- able singing and dancing talent and stamina — for over 20 years. An outstanding per- former, he has won great popularity among audiences in rural Orissa. He has also performed elsewhere in the country, including the metro- politan cities of Delhi, Calcutta and Madras. Shri Simanchal Patro receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Prahlad Natak.
