Born in 1933 in Kadmat island, Lakshadweep, Shri C. Zakkariya learnt dance initially from Medikina Chetta Syed Master and later from Beefuthumma- kudi Mohammed Sefaivala, Cheriya Koya, and Thalikandi Mohammed. Both a performer and a teacher, he is known for Kolkkali, Parichakkali, Attorn, Dolppattu, Oppanapattu, and Mappilappattu performances. He is also a composer of songs. Over the past 30 years, Shri C. Zakkariya has led many dance groups in Lakshadweep and represented the Union Territory in major regional and national festivals. He has taught a large number of dancers, contribut-ing to the preservation and revival of dance and other arts of Lakshadweep. Among other honours, he received the Lakshadweep Sahitya Kala Academy Award in 1988. Shri C. Zakkariya receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to the tribal dance of Lakshadweep.
