Nikhil Ranjan Benerjee



I present to you Sir, Shri Nikhil Ranjan Banerjee. Shri Banerjee was born in 1931. He is one of the leading instrumentalists today and a sitar player of outstanding stature. He commenced his training with his father, Jitendra Nath Banerjee, and continued his grooming under such stalwarts as Birendra Kishore Roy Choudhury, Alauddin Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. Shri Nikhil Banerjee is known for his lucid style and his lyrical presentation of ragas and professes what is known as the Seni Gharana. Shri Banerjee has toured abroad extensively. He was elected Music Laureate at the International Music Competition held in Warsaw in 1955. Shri Banerjee has received the Padma Shri. Shri Banerjee is presently Vice-Principal of the Ali Akbar College of Music, Calcutta. He is also attached as Professor of Indian Music at the Centre for World Music and Related Arts, Berkeley, California. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Nikhil Ranjan Banerjee receives the Sangeet Netak Akademi Award for Hindustani Instrumental Music
