K.P. Krishnan Kutty Poduval

Born in 1924 in Ottapalam in a family of traditional musicians, Shri K. P. Krishnan Kutty Poduval was trained in Chenda first by his uncle Shri Govinda Poduval, later by Shri Ravunni Menon and Shri Madala Chakravarthi Venkachaswami. The foremost Chenda player today, Shri Poduval is known for his vigorous technique and imaginative improvisation. He is among the few to play the instrument solo and his art as an accompanist for Kathakali is of the highest-order. A teacher of long standing of Kerala Kalamandalam, Shri Poduval has been mentor to a large number of students. He has published several Kathakali plays — Bhishma Pratigya for one — and been honoured for his work by the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi in 1970, by Kerala Kalamandalam in 1981. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri K.P. Krishnan Kutty Poduval receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Chenda for 1986.
