Born in Calcutta in 1920, Shri Ram Kumar Chatterjee learnt Hindustani vocal music from Shri Rajendra Lal Chatterjee, Ustad Zamiruddin Khan and other eminent musicians. He was later drawn to the traditional songs of Bengal, cast in classic mould. Shyamasangeet — songs of goddess Kali — are Shri Ram Kumar Chatterjee’s forte, and in the rendering he has acquired a distinct style. A popular performer over the past several decades, he has issued a large number of Shyama- sangeet records. Performance apart, Shri Ram Kumar Chatterjee has compos- ed music for Bengali films. He first received a music-direction award in 1973 for the film Strir Patra and again in 1984 for Amar Geeti. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Ram Kumar Chatterjee receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Shyamasangeet for 1986.
