Smt. Suchitra Mitra was born in 1924 in Calcutta, and received her training in music from the late Indira Debi Chaudhurani and Pankaj Kumar Mallik, Shri Shailajaranjan Majumdar and Shri Santidev Ghose. At Santiniketan she was formally instructed in Rabindra Sangeet and Hindustani classical music, evolving a distinct style in rendering the songs of Tagore. Besides achieving eminence as an exponent of Rabindra Sangeet, Smt. Mitra has contributed substantially to the musical interpretation of Tagore’s dance-dramas and the study of other aspects of Tagore’s work in music. Smt. Suchitra Mitra has performed and lectured extens- ively within the country and abroad, often as a member of cultural delegations. She has a large number of records to her credit and has written on Tagore’s music and philosophy. She is the founder of Rabi-Tirtha, a well-known teaching institution specialising in Tagore’s music and dance-dramas. Smt. Mitra was conferred the Padrnashri in 1974 and in 1980 received the H.M.V. Gold Disc for outstand- ing musical achievement. For her eminence in the field of Music and her contribution to its enrichment, Smt. Suchitra Mitra receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Rabindra Sangeet for 1985.
