Shri Siddique Manganiar was born in 1939 in the village Jhamphli in the western desert region of Rajasthan. He belongs to a family of hereditary professional musicians and was initiated in music from his early childhood. He learnt the tradi- tional art of singing and playing the Khartal from his father. Shri Manganiar has mastered a large repertoire of the traditional songs of the Manganiar com- munity which he renders with great verve and sensitivity. He has come to be known as the most outstanding folk singer and Khartal player of this region. Shri Siddique Manganiar has travelled widely within the country and abroad and his per- formances have been received with great enthusiasm, including his recent participation in the prestigeous Edinburgh Festival. The Rajasthan Sangeet Natak Akademi has honoured him with its award. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Siddique Manganiar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Folk Music for 1983.
