Born on 20 August 1916 in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Ahmad Raza Khan received his early training in music from his grandfather Ustad Ali Bux Khan and his father Ustad Chhajju Khan. He was later trained in the Vichitra Veena by Ustad Abdul Aziz Khan of the Patiala gharana. From 1935 until his recent retirement, Shri Ahmad Raza Khan worked as a staff artist in All India Radio. In these years, he helped to popularize the Vichitra Veena through his public performances and radio programmes. He has been honoured with the Tantri Vilas award, conferred by the Government of Maha- rashtra, and the award of the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi. Shri Ahmad Raza Khan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
