Zia Mohiuddin Dagar



I present to you, Madam, Sri Zia Mohiuddin Dagar. Born in 1929 in a family of noted musicians, Zia Mohiuddin Dagar, received his training in music from his father, Ziauddin Khan Dagar, the Court Musician of Udaipur. Groomed in the Dagar gharana, Sri Dagar has been continuing to preserve the Bin and Dhrupad tradition of his family. He has also done considerable research on the tonal quality of Rudra Veena. He has frequently broadcast from All India Radio and has given performances in many places in India and at important centres in Europe, America and Canada. He has been a Visiting Professor at Wesleyan University and at the American Society for Eastern Arts in USA. At present he is teaching at the University of Washington. He has to his credit many disc recordings. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Sri Zia Mohiuddin Dagar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Hindustani Instrumental Music for 1981.
