Born in 1923 in the village of Veerakkan, Tamil Nadu, Shri Dharmapuram Panchanatha Swaminathan received his training in music from R. Velayudha Mudaliar and Chittoor Subramanya Pillai. He was also trained at the Thevara Pathasala at Dharmapuram and received the Sangeetha Bhu- shanam degree from Annamalai University. Apart from music, he studied philosophy, Sanskrit and Tamil. Dharmapuram P. Swamina- than is a distinguished Oduvar of Tamil Nadu — a singer of the Shaiva hymns known as Thevaram. He has devoted a lifetime to this tradition, developing an authentic style and building a very large repertoire of Thevaram hymns. He has been performing regularly on radio and has issued over two hundred audio- cassettes of Thevaram. Widely respected for his music in Tamil Nadu, he has been honoured with the title Kalaimamani by the Tamil Nadu Eyal Isai Natakam Manram in 1977 and with the title Isai Peraringar in 1992.
