Born in 1939 in Imphal, Shri S. Devabrata Singh was trained in Thang-ta, the Manipuri martial art, by Sarvashri L. Ibungohal Singh, Paonam Tonsana Singh, P. Manikchand Singh and N. Khelchandra Singh. He also learned to play the Pung from Shri N. Brijabidhu Singh and Shri H. Gopalmacha Singh. Over the last three decades, Shri Devabrata Singh has dedicated himself entirely for popularizing the art of Thang- ta. He represents the Paona style of Thang-ta, which is named after Paona Brajabasi, the legendary hero of the Anglo- Manipuri war of 1889. Shri Devabrata Singh founded Hula Sindamsang, an institute of martial arts, in 1977. Many of his students have held demonstra- tions all over the country and have participated in major international events including the Festivals of India in U.K., France, U.S.A. and Germany. He continues to research in the lesser known aspects of the art under the guidance of the renowned expert Shri N. Khelchandra Singh. He has also participated in Manipuri films and theatre as a Thang-ta expert. Shri S. Devabrata Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contri- bution to Thang-ta.
