Born in 1919 in Bijna, Madhya Pradesh, Shri Chhatrapati Singh received his training in Pakhawaj from Swami Ram Dasji of Ayodhya, a representative of the Kudau Singh gharana. He also learnt the Tabla from Ustad Wazid Hussein Khalifa of Lucknow. Shri Chhatrapati Singh has performed widely over a long career, accompanying many noted musicians on the Pakhawaj. He has also won acclaim as a soloist. As a teacher at Benares Hindu University, Shri Chhatrapati Singh has trained a number of professional Pakhawaj players. He has also taught for a year at the University of Washington, U.S.A., and travelled in Europe on teaching and performance tours. For his service to music Shri Chhatrapati Singh received the Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1986. Shri Chhatrapati Singh receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani instrumental music.
