Born in 1939 in the village of Jattikalan, Haryana, Pandit Tule Ram was trained in Swang, the folk theatre of the region, by Pandit Man Singh of Sonepat district. He spent his formative years in the company of folk singers and entertainers, establishing his own Swang group while still quite young. Pandit Tule Ram has been practising Swang for over 30 years, and has led his group in numerous performances all over northern India. He has performed less often in other parts of the country. By his long service to Swang, Pandit Tule Ram has played an important role in the propagation of the folk theatre of Haryana. Pandit Tule Ram receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Swang.
