Born in 1936 in Rawalpindi, now in Pakistan, Shrimati Madanbala Sindhu learnt Hindustani classical music initially from Ustads Ghulam Mustafa Khan and Ghulam Hussain Khan of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana. She later trained with Shri Jia Lal Vasant, Shri M.L. Sonik, Shri Satish Bhatia, and UstadYunus Mallik. Shrimati Madanbala Sindhu has had a long career as a popular singer of the folk songs of Punjab and as an actress in Punjabi and Urdu musical theatre. She has a large repertoire of songs from the ballads of Punjab: Heer-Ranjha, Mirza-Saheban, Sassi-Punnu, etc. Her stage performances have won her acclaim in plays including Chan Badlan da, Sulagde Darya, Dharti te Swarg, Ghalib Kaun Hai and Dard Ayega Dabe Paon. Shrimati Sindhu has issued a number of gramo- phone records and cassettes of shabads, folk and stage songs in Punjabi. Shrimati Madanbala Sindhu receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to the folk music of Punjab.
