Born in Lahore in 1926, Shri Asa Singh Mastana was initiated into music by Shri Durga Prasad Kathak. He was attracted early to the folk music of Punjab and over a career of four decades has come to be reckoned amo- ng its most popular exponents. Shri Asa Singh Mastana has contributed to the populariza- tion of folk music all over India, tours abroad taking him to Aden, Afghanistan, Syria and the Soviet Union. He is specially known for the famous ballads of Heer Ranjha and Mirza- Sahiban. A regular broadcaster, he has also sung for several films. Among the honours that have come to Shri Asa Singh Mastana are the Dilgir Award of the Government of Punjab in 1981, The Punjabi Akademi Award and Padma Shri in 1985. For his eminence in the field of music and his contribution to its enrichment Shri Asa Singh Mastana receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Folk Music of Punjab for 1986.
