Shri N.P. Rama Poduval was born in 1916 at Alananoor in Kerala, in a family of traditional musicians. He received his training in music from his father the late Sankunni Poduval and the late Chembai Vaidyanatha Bhagavathar. He began performing Soparia Sangeet — ritual devotional music offered in the temples of Kerala at an early age. Later, he taught vocal music and Edakka in Kerala Kalamandalam when the poet Vallathol was actively associat- ed with the institution. Shri Poduval has developed a distinctive style of rendering Thyani and Ashtapadi composi- tions which makes him the most outstanding practitioner of this art in Kerala. Shri Poduval has sung for years in the various important temples of Kerala and received the Kerala Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1983. For his eminence in the field of Music and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri N.P. Rama Poduval receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Sopana Sangeet for 1985.
