Sakharam Tavde



I present to you, Sir, Shri Sakharam, who receives the Akademi Award for instrumental music of the Hindustani School. Born in 1879, Shri Sakharam is a well-known player of Pakhawaj. He received training from Shri Bala Saheb Panse and Shri Shanker Bhaiya of the same gharana. For many years he was the Court musician at Gwalior, and later established a School of his own in Indore. Since 1950 Pandit Tavde is a member of the staff of the Bhatkhande college of Music in Lucknow, and scores of students have received training in mridang and tabla from him. He is the author of two text books on mridang. The College awarded him the honorary degree of M. Mus. in appreciation of his art.
