Born 1920 in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh, Shri Ramshankardas Pagaldas learnt Pakhawaj from Swami Bhagwandas, Shri Ram Mohini Saran and Baba Thakurdas of the Kudau Singh and Awadhi gharanas. He also learnt Tabla and vocal music from Shri Nepal Singh and Shri Sant Saran ‘Mast’, musicians of the same school. Shri Pagaldas has performed widely, accompanying on Pakhawaj several noted vocalists and instrumentalists; he also performs solo. A teacher of both Pakhawaj and Tabla, he has taught at Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh. Shri Pagaldas has founded a music school himself — Hanumat Vishwa Kala Sangit Ashram, Ayodhya — and has written a few manuals for Pakhawaj and Tabla. Featured on Akashvani and Doordar- shan, Shri Pagaldas has accompanied Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Khan’s Rudra Vina on Pakhawaj on a gramophone record; he has also been recorded solo. Associated with Ramlila and traditional theatre for many years, Shri Pagaldas has received several honours for his work, especially from institutions in Uttar Pradesh. Shri Ramshankardas Pagaldas receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribu-tion to Hindustani instrumental music.
