Hashmat Ali Khan

Born on 1 October 1945 in Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, into a traditional family of musicians, Shri Hashmat Ali Khan received his training in the Tabla from his grandfather Mohammed Shafi Khan. He was later groomed in the art by Niazu Khan, a noted Tabla artist of the Ajrada gharana. He started his career at the Shri Ram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, as an accompanist and was later a teacher of Tabla. Subsequently, he served All India Radio as a staff artist, initially in Srinagar and then in Delhi.
Shri Hashmat Ali Khan has performed at music concerts since the 1960s, winning recognition as a skilful player. He has accompanied many notable musicians, both vocalists and instrumentalists, including such names as Hafiz Ali Khan, Amjad Ali Khan, Shambu Maharaj, and Birju Maharaj. He has established t he Tabla Academy of the Ajrada gharana in the Capital, where he has trained a number of talented students. He has performed widely in India and abroad, and participated in seminars and workshops on rhythm. He has many recordings to his credit, including a Tabla solo issued by India Archive Music in the United States.
Shri Hashrnat Ali Khan receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindustani music.
