Born in 1957 in Delhi, Shrimati Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari graduated from Delhi University and subse- quently trained in theatre at the National School of Drama. She received the School’s Gold Medal for acting and worked as an actress with NSD’s Repertory Company from 1979 to 1989. Surya ki Antim Kiran se Surya ki Pehli Kiran Tak, Mahabhoj, Macbeth, Virasat, and Umrao are among the plays in which she played leading roles. She has also acted in many teleplays, telefilms and serials. Shrimati Tewari has earned renown as a costume designer in the field of theatre. She has designed costumes for more than seventy productions including Tuglaq and Agni aur Barkha directed by Prasanna, Andha Yug directed by M.K. Raina and Ram Gopal Bajaj, Seagull and Umrao directed by Anuradha Kapoor, Hamlet directed by Henry Peterson, Einstein directed by Mohan Maharishi, Sharvilak directed by Bansi Kaul, Yahudi ki Ladki directed by B.M. Shah, Swapnavasavdatta directed by B. V. Karanth, and Yumgatha directed by Bhanu Bharati. She has also designed costumes for a number of television produc- tions including Zameen, Tanhaiyan, Titli, Vapsi etc. Shrimati Ahluwalia has received the National Award for costume designing in Shekhar Kapoor’s film Bandit Queen (1995-96), and has received other distinctions for her work in The Burning Season, directed by Harvey Crossward, and Earth 1947 by Deepa Mehta. She also assisted with costumes for the film Gandhi directed by Richard Attenborough. She has been a Visiting Professor at NSD and at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts, Sydney. Besides, she has directed and partici- pated in theatre workshops in various parts of the country. Shrimati Dolly Ahluwalia Tewari receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her contribu- tion to theatre as a costume designer.
