Kanishka Sen



Born on 31 December 1938, Shri Kanishka Sen took a diploma in drama from Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta, in 1962, where he now teaches stage- craft and light-designing. As a lighting designer and teacher Shri Sen has made a significant contribution to contemporary theatre. He has designed the lighting for more than a hundred productions directed by eminent and promising young directors alike. He has also designed the lighting at many prestigious national and international festivals of dance including the Konark Festival and the Khajuraho Festival. He visited Europe (1964), the United States and Canada (1975), Japan (1988,1993, 1994) and Germany (1991) as a lighting designer for various important events including the Festivals of India in Japan and Germany. Shri Sen has been the Chief Technical and Lighting Advisor to the Govern- ment of West Bengal for several years and has designed the lights for a number of auditoria in the country. Shri Sen has received many titles and honours. The Government of West Bengal honoured him as Best Lighting Designer in 1982 and 1990. Shri Kanishka Sen receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre as a lighting designer.
