Shri Goverdhan Panchal was born in 1913 in Gujarat. He was attracted to the fine arts while in school in Bombay and joined Santiniketan in 1933, to study painting under Shri Nandalal Base. There he veered towards the stage, performing in Rabindranath Tagore’s dance- dramas which toured north and south India. Shri Panchal joined Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Bombay, as Theatre-in-charge and Principal of its dance school and directed several dance-dramas including Jai Somanath under its auspices. Also in Bombay he helped found the Indian National Theatre, designing sets for its earliest dance-dramas. In 1959 he joined the National School of Drama as Assistant Professor for Scenic Design and Stage- craft; he taught in the school till 1975. Shri Panchal has designed sets for over sixty productions, ranging from classical Sanskrit drama to contemporary experi- mental plays, and written on production aspects of the Sanskrit theatre. His work Kuttampalam & Kutiyattam was published by Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1984. Shri Panchal received the Gujarat State Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982-83. For his eminence in the field of Theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Gover- dhan Panchal receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Scenic Design for 1985.
