Shakti Sen



Born in 1932 in Tazpur village in Bangladesh, Shri Shakti Sen started his career in the Bengali theatre as an actor. He later gravitated to make-up, which he saw was his métier. His first play as a make-up man was the historic production of Nabanna. Since then, he has worked in numerous major productions on the Kolkata stage including Chhenra Tar, Tin Paisar Pala, and Mukta Dhara. Shombhu Mitra, Ajit Bandyopadhyay, Kumar Roy, and Rudraprasad Sen- gupta are some of the eminent theatre directors with whom he has worked. He has also done make-up in many important films including Satyajit Ray’s Apur Sansar, Paras Pather and Debi, and Ritwik Ghatak’s Ajantrik and Meghe Dhaka Tara. Shri Sen has served as a Lecturer in make-up at Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. He has received several honours including the West Bengal State Akademi Award. He has been felicitated by the Indian People’s Theatre Association and Bohurupee, leading theatre institutions of the country. Shri Shakti Sen receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre as a make-up artist.
