Born in 1947 in Noor Mahal, Punjab, Shri Kamal Tewari was initiated in music at an early age. Later, he received extensive training from Girdhari Lal and Amar Nath, and graduated in Hindustani vocal music from Punjab University, Chandigarh. Simultaneously, he also trained in theatre and obtained a Post- graduate Diploma in Hindi Theatre from the same university. Assimilating elements from classical, folk, and tribal music, Kamal Tewari has evolved a distinct style of music for the stage. He has composed music for more than forty plays and telefilms, notable among which are Karmawali, Muavze, Dusra Aadmi and Rani Kokila. He has also extensively documented the traditional Naqaal theatre and the folk songs, dance and theatre of Haryana. He has acted in several noted films including Train to Pakistan, Shaheed Udham Singh, Kahan se Kahan Tak, Mohan Das, and Dishant. He has led Indian cultural delega- tions abroad and participated in international seminars. He is currently Additional Director of Cultural Affairs, Government of Haryana. He has been variously honoured by arts institutions for his outstanding work. Shri Kamal Tewari receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to theatre music.
