Born in 1936 in the village of Madhutaty, West Bengal, Shri Gaibi Nath Dasgupta studied electrical engineering before beginning his career in stage lighting at the National School of Drama, Delhi. A member of the School faculty from 1959 to 1986, he has taught a whole generation of students who are practising stage technicians today. He has also devised the lighting for about a hundred major productions by eminent directors at the National School of Drama and elsewhere. Shri Dasgupta has been responsible for the lighting layout of several theatres as well, including the auditorium of Bharat Bhavan, Bhopal. A visiting professor at various Indian universities, Shri G. N. Dasgupta has travelled in the Soviet Union, Europe, and Australia on Cultural Exchange Programme sponsorship. His book Guide to Stage Lighting, published in 1986, is the only authoritative work on the subject for practitioners in India, For his long service to theatre in the Capital, Shri G. N. Dasgupta was honoured by the Delhi Natya Sangh in 1987. Shri G. N. Dasgupta receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to stage lighting in Indian theatre.
