Vasant Shankar Kanetkar



Born at Rahimatpur in the Satara District of Maharashtra in 1922, Shri Vasant Shankar Kanetkar is the son of an eminent poet of Maharashtra, Shri S.K. Kanetkar, known as Kavi Gireesh. He started his literary career in 1950 and was recognised as an important playwright with his very first play in 1958 and which won the State Government award for the best play of the year. His two subsequent plays also won State Awards and one of these, Rajgadala Jevha Jag Yete won the Sangeet Natak Akademi prize in 1964. He has written over thirty plays based mostly on social, historical and mythological themes which have run for hundreds of performances in Marathi and in other Indian languages. A former Professor of Marathi and English at the H.P.T. College, Nasik, he is today one of most well-known playwrights in Marathi language. He is a life worker of the Gokhale Educa- tion Society and was the President of the Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Natya Sammelan in 1971. For his eminence in the field of Theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Vasant Kanetkar receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Play- writing for 1984.
