Shaikh Dawood



Born in 1916 in Sholapur, Maharashtra, Shaikh Dawood received his initial training in Tabla from Ustad Kasim Khan. He was later a student of Ustads Alladiya Khan, Mohammed Khan and Chhote Khan of Hyderabad and Mahboob Khan of Miraj. Over long years of training Shri Shaikh Dawood was able to absorb the Tabla baj of Farrukhabad, Punjab, Delhi, and Ajrada. In 1936 Shaikh Dawood had the occasion to accompany Ustad Abdul Karim Khan at Deccan Radio, Hyderabad — owned by the Nizam — and served there till 1955. From 1959 to 1978 he was on the staff of All India Radio, Hyderabad. Over a concert career spanning five decades he has been regarded as a Tabla player of rare distinction, and has accomp- anied notable Hindustani vocalists and instrumentalists of all major gharanas. He has also trained a number of students in Tabla. For his service to music, Shaikh Dawood received the Fellowship of Andhra Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi in 1979. Shaikh Dawood receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for his contribution to Hindu- stani instrumental music.
