Satya Prasad Barua



Born in 1919 in Aizwal, Shri Barua began writing plays in his early twenties. With Sikha and Jyotirekha — works of a later date — he came into public notice and prominence, the plays staged by theatre groups an over Assam. Shri Satya Prasad Barua has now nineteen plays to his credit besides adaptations of Sophocles, Shakespeare, Ibsen, Gogol, Chekhov and Becket. Nayika Natyakar — an experimental play premiered in 1975 has been translated into English. Shri Barua has also been an actor on the Assamese stage, receiving in 1978 the Best Actor’s Award of the All India Critics’ Association, Calcutta. Among his publications are several dramaturgical texts, children’s plays, a novel and translations of fiction. For his eminence in the field of theatre and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Satya Prasad Barua receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Playwriting for 1986.
